Programs TREK (Teacher Research Experience for the advancement of Knowledge) and PERT (Preservice/Early career Research for Teachers) include a six week summer research experience designed to give an experienced teacher, a pre-service or early career teacher, and a high school student an opportunity to work together with leading researchers in the fields of nano/biotechnology/biochemistry. TREK/PERT participants will be affiliated with Marshall University, West Virginia University, and/or West Virginia State University.

Teachers and students in the emphasis area will not only gain technical knowledge, but also will be trained in the skills necessary to engage with the broader public in a dialogue about the role of nanoscience and other cutting-edge technologies in society, as well as specific laboratory and analytical techniques to support assigned independent projects. This academic experience promotes undergraduate research which increases retention, boosts academic performance, and increases the likelihood of acceptance into graduate and professional programs.
